Dana Point, California based Greenfield Communications designs and installs advanced FTTH networks in master planned residential communities in the Western United States. The company has so far managed ten FTTH projects with more than 5,000 customers and is actively designing and constructing eleven additional projects (representing over 75,000 homes). In addition the company claims it has secured 22 more FTTH projects representing over 200,000 homes.

As per the deal, Reach Communications will act as the underlying digital voice provider for these residential networks. In a press release, Michael Hartman, President & CEO of Reach Communications pointed out that, the worldwide VoIP market swelled by 34 million new subscriptions in 2006, according to market research firm In-Stat.

“As wired communities continue to sprout across the country, such as those developed by Greenfield, it’s no surprise that domestic consumers continue to embrace VoIP and its many benefits,” Hartman said in the release. “What is truly important to note, is that as an industry, we are barely scratching the surface in regard to consumer market penetration. By 2011, In-Stat predicts the consumer VoIP market will total nearly $44 billion worldwide. We look forward to working with innovators such as Greenfield, and to achieving our shared goal of spreading quality digital voice to individuals worldwide.”

“Providers in the VoIP space are looking to minimize costs while still delivering a top notch service and growing market share,” Mike Powers, CEO, Greenfield Communications, said. “The combination of Reach Communications' core technology and the Greenfield Communications market approach is a perfect way to accomplish these goals.”

Reach Communications, a provider of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) solutions for service providers and consumers worldwide, today announced that Melaleuca, Inc, will begin selling its VoIP services in Puerto Rico. Melaleuca is one of the largest and most successful sales and marketing organizations and is continuously honored for its value-added, family-friendly policies and programs.

Senior executives at Reach Communications commented recently that a strong partnership with a company like Melaleuca demonstrates that a company does not need to be a voice service provider to utilize existing distribution channels and gain a competitive edge in selling VoIP services. "We are very pleased that Melaleuca will be expanding its service offerings in Puerto Rico to include our VoIP services," stated Michael Hartman, President & CEO of Reach Communications. "It is especially gratifying when a powerhouse such as Melaleuca, whose core competency is outside the telecommunications arena, sees the benefit of selling VoIP through the thousands of business builders it has in Puerto Rico."

As a company that prides itself in enhancing every aspect of its customers' lives, a spokesperson for Melaleuca said this week that Melaleuca Inc. immediately recognized the potential Reach has to provide superior and affordable alternatives to nationally advertised brands. Jason Miller, Marketplace Manager of Melaleuca, stated, "Reach Communications is the type of company that we have tremendous success with when we bring their product to market. Reach Communications is providing us the best available product to distribute through the thousands of marketing executives and preferred customers that we have in Puerto Rico." The direct consumer marketing company was confident that no other VoIP provider is offering this combination of high-quality voice service, coupled with local telephone numbers, added features and tremendous savings. "We see a significant opportunity for us to differentiate ourselves from any other VoIP offering and rapidly gain market share," Miller said.

Hartman was very positive about Melaleuca's business model. "It's a wonderful fit with Reach’s product," he said, "They have changed the way that hundreds of thousand of people shop by eliminating the middleman, reducing marketing and distribution costs, and offering products directly to the consumer through a full-service catalog and Internet shopping system. Their sales growth is truly remarkable and manifests the superior care and quality that their organization utilizes in selling high-quality products." Both companies are confident that this is the right step for the future of communications in Puerto Rico.

An Interview with Michael Hartman, President & CEO of Reach Communications

You are one of the Pioneers in VoIP. How did you get involved in this technology, and what are you are seeing in the marketplace today?

Michael Hartman: Reach Communications is one of the few that realized the power of VoIP when VocalTec provided VoIP along with extra features such as voice mail and caller ID in 1995, but it only could be used between two users running a PC with the same software, so it was only possible to speak to other Vocaltec customers. In 1998 Level 3 showcased their soft switch that they claimed would replace traditional tandem switches, and I was sold. I left my position as Business Strategies & International Development that I held at KPN to start Reach Communications. Today there are a lot of misconceptions. Everybody realizes that VoIP works and that the technology is very invasive. But few people can point to the reasons why a particular company is or isn't going to be successful. There are literally thousands of companies selling VoIP the world over, but few are actually doing it successfully on their own equipment. You go down the road and see a sandwich shop selling VoIP that does not make them a VoIP company.

When you sign up a new provider or wholesale customer, as you have been doing since 1998, how long does it take to begin implementing and selling the service?

Michael Hartman: Typically it takes between two weeks and 30 days to get the the provider or customer setup, however this is not due to technology limitations. Most of the time is spent in the contraction and negotiation phase. Today, we have over 50 wholesale accounts and many accounts that could be very material to our business growth. Some of these are just ramping up.

How important is price in the selling of VoIP?

Michael Hartman: It is a huge market opportunity, and less a matter of price than reaching more people and finding more channels to sell the product. In the race to zero, you are also in the race to failure. It has to be a financially viable and sustainable model. We all learned a great deal from the build it and they will come attitude in 2000 and 2001. It is a different world out there today. You have to make money. We pay a lot of attention to the financial metrics of our business today.

How is VoIP technology going to evolve over the next 5 years and where is Reach going to fit in?

Michael Hartman: The PSTN network is going away; I can confidently predict that. The whole multi-billion dollar PSTN infrastructure is actually worthless. It will simply be a question of how big the Internet pipe is. Our system runs on the Internet -- that's our network. In the beginning we had two separate networks. We ran our VoIP product inexpensively on Linux servers, and we ran our TDM interconnections with our Alcatel switches. Now, all of our traffic is run through several Mera MVTS soft switches. Even our TDM traffic is sent via multiple Cisco AS5400s to reach our MVTS. All our customers and providers utilize the same billing system, EyeBill. Soon we will be able to remove our Alcatel switches completely and utilize only our MVTS switch for connectivity. The Internet IS the network.

Reach Communications has a full range of enterprise-capable services that are offered to telecom carriers and service providers on a wholesale basis.

Reach Communications understands that multi national corporations and other Enterprise customers need access to offices, partners, suppliers and clients in global destinations. Telecom carriers and other service providers that have only domestic or regional operations and network coverage need to serve this global requirement in order to protect their Enterprise customers and revenues from competitors. Reach Communications has experienced growing demand from carriers to provide geographic extensions to their home-market Enterprise services. We have subsequently designed and implemented new solutions that are ideally suited to this requirement, and are now introducing these new 'Enterprise-class' services on a wholesale basis.

We will provide a seamless extension of your domestic and regional telecommunications services into the overseas markets you need to reach. Our network will effectively become your network, providing you with immediate global coverage. We offer transparent delivery in order that we remain your hidden 'partner' in serving your Enterprise customers. And because we do not focus on directly competing with you for the Enterprises in your territory, we can simply act in the background as your termination 'partner'. Our core objective is to provide you with services and international access that will enable you to create additional value for your end-customers.

Reach Communications implements new carrier grade network in order to grow and compete with large telecoms.

Reach Communications has successfully completed the purchase and migration of all VoIP customers and providers to the new Mera Systems MVTS soft switch.

This new carrier-grade softswitch includes gatekeeper and proxy functionality that dramatically simplifies VoIP peering on small and medium-grade networks. MVTS is a non-vendor-specific single platform solution with simple static routing and network protection capabilities. MVTS intrinsic border control mechanisms provide a single entry point into carrier's VoIP infrastructure to enable centralized authentication and billing by third-party billing systems, facilitate interconnection with peering partners and enhance network security. Until now Reach has been utilizing a proprietary soft switching solution that was jointly designed by Chen Xu Chief, Information Officer and Michael Hartman, President & CEO of Reach Communications. The system included a series of inexpensive Linux servers with software that was completely designed in-house.

The new MVTS Carrier-grade softswitches enables Reach Communications to operate to the utmost of our capability and provide the essential functionality to grow and prosper: elaborate call routing, translation and codec transcoding, seamless interconnection with any network.

In addition to completing the migration process from our in-house designed softswitch to MVTS Reach also implemented and migrated to a new billing solution called EyeBill. EyeBill VoIP Billing Software is an advanced web-based modular application that enables telecoms to provide flexible voice services, manage effectively service offerings and grow their voice businesses due to the systems stability and high traffic scalability.

Reach will continue to support any legacy customers that have TDM (tandem) connections to our Alcatel switches, however all TDM voice traffic will pass through multiple Cisco AS5400 voice gateways and transported over to the new MVTS softswitch.
